Required alarms must be photoelectric, comply with AS 3786-2014 and not contain an ionisation sensor.
QUEENSLAND SMOKE ALARM COMPLIANCE
Is your home ready for 2027?
From 1 January 2027, Queensland's remaining existing private homes, townhouses and units are required to meet the interconnected photoelectric smoke alarm requirements.
WHY IT MATTERS
When one sounds, they all sound.
Interconnected smoke alarms are designed so that when one required alarm detects smoke, the other interconnected alarms in the dwelling also sound. That can provide earlier warning to people elsewhere in the home and more time to escape safely.
WHAT DOES COMPLIANT MEAN?
Queensland's key requirements.
For the 2027 requirements, required smoke alarms need to meet the Queensland rules for alarm type, age, operation, interconnection and placement.
Required alarms must be interconnected so that when one alarm activates, all interconnected required alarms activate.
Alarms are required in each bedroom and in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling, with alternate placement rules where there is no hallway.
Each storey requires smoke alarm coverage. Where a storey has no bedrooms, at least one alarm is required in the likely path of travel to an exit.
Required smoke alarms must be less than 10 years old and must operate when tested.
Smoke alarms may be hardwired or use a non-removable 10-year battery where permitted. Existing hardwired alarms that require replacement must be replaced with hardwired alarms.
General information only. Smoke alarm requirements can depend on the dwelling and existing installation. Current Queensland requirements should be confirmed for the individual property.
NOT SURE WHAT YOU HAVE?
Common reasons homes need attention.
Older homes may have alarms that are not interconnected, alarms outside bedrooms only, expired units, older alarm technology, or a mix of hardwired and battery alarms. A compliance assessment can identify the existing setup before any work is recommended.
FREE ASSESSMENT
Free Smoke Alarm Compliance Assessment.
We'll assess your existing smoke alarm setup against the current Queensland requirements and explain what, if anything, needs upgrading. If work is required, we'll provide a quote before proceeding.
The free assessment relates to your smoke alarm setup and is not a general electrical safety inspection or certification of the entire property.
